Matchbox Ford Mustang with boat trailer
A Ford Mustang with a boat trailer is a weird combination of course, but for me it's very special. In 1967, at the age of 6, I spent 13 weeks in hospital recovering from meningitis. In hospital I got this car with trailer from my granddad. To be honest, it's the only present I ever got from him. He died ten years later. I've always kept the Mustang and the boat, but over the years they got scratched and started to look horrible.
About 8 years ago I found the Ford Mustang, mint and boxed, in a model car shop in Rotterdam (Modelcars at the Bergselaan). It was 25 guilders at that time (quite a price for this model), but I bought it right away. I found the trailer with boat a few weeks ago on eBay. It was only $12.
The Ford Mustang was a special Matchbox model as it had steering front wheels. The Matchbox catalog # for the Mustang was 8, the boat was # 9. That's probably the reason why my granddad bought the two models: they were next or on top of each other in the Matchbox display at the only toy shop in our village. I remember my mother sometimes bought a Matchbox model for me. They were 95 cents at that time. Later the price was raised to 1,25. I had a small case full of Matchbox models as a kid. Dinky Toys and Corgi's simply were too expensive... I've spent many pleasant hours playing with these cars. Later I got into model trains (and I still do). But that's a whole different story...
New Trailer for the Aplysia
Leaving Nick's cove and going home with the new boat trailer after the annual "Hair of the Dog" New Years Day row on Tomales Bay.
My back is so much happier at not car topping the boat, and it was very easy to load.
This is a Harbor Freight internet special that arrives in three boxes and you assemble it yourself. I modified it from 8 inch wheels to 12 inch wheels and added a strap winch. It rolls better and the hubs stay cooler. The wherry became an impromptu kayak rack so Marilyn could paddle with us. With this little rig our adventures are much easier to get going in the morning and we look forward to paddling in new lakes, rivers, and bays.
